Changi airport began operating in 1955. It is
the 3rd airport built by the Singaporean Government, after Kallang airport
and Seletar airport. Located in Changi, 20 km from Singapore city, at first
it only had a single runway and a medium-sized terminal. But they had problem
when the number of passengers increased from 300,000 to 1,700,000 in 1975,
and escalated when passengers increased to a numerous 4 million people in
1975! The airport was unable to accommodate this amount of passengers.
To overcome the problem, the Singaporean government had 2 choices:
renovate the existing airport or build a better airport somewhere else. They
decided to renovate the airport after considering that it was not located
so far away from a potential area. The unique thing is that the location
of the new terminal used to be a bay.
First they built the runway, terminal, 80-meter tall tower, and other
supporting facilities. Terminal 1 was finally finished and began operating
on the 1st of July 1981. Terminal 2 was finished in 1986 and started operating
on the 22nd of November 1990. And now, the airport has become one of Singapore's
national pride!
